The Foundations of Filmspace

Finding the MVP

Identified the jobs to be done and the rationale for adding the feature for the app.

Jobs to be Done

Feature

Rationale

When I’m searching for locations, I want to be able to filter by them, so I can view locations that fit my interests.

Filtering system for search results.

This feature will make the process to book more seamless and simple for the user to find what they are looking for.

When I’m researching locations, I want to se reviews from other users, so I know what to expect.

Building trust within user community

Hearing from other users helps build trust around the app and makes venues more reputable

When I'm browsing locations, I want to be able to like/favorite locations, so I can easily return to them later.

Personalized user accounts

Adding this feature helps users stay organized when searching for a location and allows them to quickly find a location they found interesting.

Navigating through FilmSpace

Using the MVP I created a site map to outline the organization and navigation of Filmspace.

Early Designs

Utilized the crazy 8s method to create rapid sketches. This allowed me to explore and experiment with different layouts and navigation, leaving room for iteration and refinement.

Evaluating Usability

Low-fidelity prototype testing allowed me to get feedback early in the design process to ensure that the final product meets user needs and expectation. During testing, I was able to observe how my participants interacted with my app and this helped me identify any usability challenges, navigation issues, or conceptual problems.

Findings

By listening to my participants go through the tasks verbally, I was able to detect any issues based on their confusion or comments. Participants also expressed their desires for additional features which I was able to take into consideration.

  • Usability Issues: Participants expressed that the initial search process was too long and could be condensed to one screen.
  • Confusing Layout: Some believed the filtering options were a bit confusing.
  • Positive Notes: Some expressed that the flow was similar to other booking apps so the process felt familiar.

Optimizing designs

Moving onto mid-fidelity designs, I added different breakpoints to make it responsive to increase accessibility for users.

Establishing Visual Design

To begin my visual design process, I created mood boards and style guides to achieve a cohesive and impactful brand identity, The mood boards serve as visual inspiration to capture mood, aesthetic, and language of the brand.

Retrospective

What went well

I'm happy with my overall design and I'm proud of this being my first full-length UX/UI project. Going into this case, I wanted to design a tool that solves a problem I'm familiar with. I chose to design Filmspace because I ran into these problems as a film maker myself and this made relating to an audience easy for me. I was able to communicate my problem statement and with the help of my user testers, I was able to come up with a design solution.

Challenges

Initially, I went into this project with a mobile-first approach, and I felt it was difficult to make my designs responsive to web and tablet screens. I think designing more responsive apps will help me overcome this challenge and doing more research on current popular responsive apps.

Future Considerations

Moving forward, I want to continue using this method of design process which is getting early feedback to gather information early to identify any usability issues and make more informed decisions based on my target audience.
